The first records I have found on Isaac W. Brown was his marriage to
Therase Aurelia Winchell on May 7, 1865 in Jefferson City, MO. Marriage
was performed by Minister R. H. Manier in the presence of W. C. Hagans
and Amy E. Winchell and C. J. Ostrander. It was filed May 12, 1865 by
County Clerk W. H. Lusk., in Marriage Book C, Cole County, MO.
On Jul 3, 1875 Isaac bought land from Joseph K. Roberts (Trustee for Wm.
H. ? and Thomas J. Barclay) on the Baltimore and Potomac R.R. , known as
Brick Kiln Lots being part of Lot 1 and Lot 2 in the Village of
Glennville, Vansville District, Prince Georges County, MD. for the sum of
$305. The sale was finalized on July 25, 1876 verified by copy of court
records dated July 25, 1876.
On July 10, 1878 Isaac leased room and power in a Steam Saw and Grist
Mill located at Glendale, MD. for the sum of $30 per month. This was
rented from John Lynch of Washington, DC. It was to be used for: one
stave bolting machine, one stave trimming machine, one stave joining
machine, and one planning machine for the manufacture of sugar shooks,
sawed staves & etc..
In the Federal Census of 1880, dated June 11, 1880; Isaac W., age 37,
Miller, born in MD, father born in NY, mother born in MD; Theresea A.,
age 36, keeping house, born in OH. father born in NY, mother born in NY;
Charles W., age 15, born in MO; Hattie, age 8, born in MD and Willie,
age 5, born in MD; were listed as living in Bowie(14th Election
District), Prince Georges County, MD.
Isaac W., Theresa A., Charles W., Hattie G. and William H. Brown lived at
Bridgeport, across the St. Johns River from Federal Point. Isaac and
Charles W. operated a saw mill. On Sept. 25, 1887 Isaac killed his wife
Theresa by "cutting and choking". He was adjudged a "homicidal maniac"
and placed in "lunacy". He was confined to the Florida State Hospital
for the
Insane at
Chattahoochee, Florida. Isaac died in the State Hospital on
23 September, 1890. "He was buried in the
asylum cemetery, and his grave
marked by a
suitable headboard with his name, date of death and the county
he was from on
it." This info was from the head of the hospital , J. N. Smith,
M.D. in a
letter written to Charles W. Brown on October 5, 1890. ( This cemetery is
across the
highway from the hospital and has not been used since 1923. It is over
grown and not kept
up. The grave markers are almost all rotted away and those
that are left are not legible.
The Abandoned and Neglected Cemeteries Task
Force under the State Comptrollers Office has
assured me that they have this
cemetery on their list for cleanup.) Charles was appointed
the administrator
of his property and affairs. It was so stated that he also owned
property, personal
and real, in Maryland and possibly other states.
C. W. Brown, in the name of I. W. Browns estate, purchased the Brown homestead
of 2/12
acres including sawmill and machinery thereon, from Ambrose B. Hart on
March 30, 1889
(Putnam County Deed Book 18, Page 8, Warranty Deed, filed
May 18, 1889. This property was
later quit claimed to C. W. Brown by Hattie
Brown Wilcox and W. H. Brown in exchange for
property in Glennville, Maryland
that was owned by I. W. Brown.( Deed Book 52, Page
358 dated Nov. 18 1896 )
According to the Levy Books dated 1892 & 1893 his taxes on property in Bowie,
MD were
paid on April 9, 1992 and on June 15, 1993 they were paid on 4 1/2
acres and the remainder
was declared as insolvent. The next Levy Book
dated 1910 there was no reference to Isaac W. Brown. In the appraisal of
his estate made by Charles W. Brown there was no mention of real estate
in Florida.
